What are the spiritual life principles of Reiki?

Usui Sensei, after coming back from Mount Kurama (in the mountains near Kyoto) started to heal people with his hands. He realised that certain people he had cured came back later with the same condition. He came to the conclusion, that not only do we need to take care of our body, but we also need to take care of our mind, i.e. balance the body and the mind.

The Gokai

He therefore elaborated 5 life principles called Gokai, each of them relevant "Just for today", i.e. in the present moment. These Gokai help to balance the mind with the body. They need to be recited, aloud, and daily, three times in the morning and three times in the evening, in order to benefit best from their effects.

KYO DAKE WA - "Just for today"

IKARUNA - "Do not be Angry": Anger is a family of self destructive emotions directed toward the past. The past cannot be changed, so why do we need to harm ourselves with it. Let's focus on what we can change, i.e. the present moment.

SHIN PAI SUNA -"Do not worry": Worry is a family of self destructive emotions directed toward the future. The future has not happened yet, so why do we need to harm ourselves with it. Let's focus on what we can change, i.e. the present moment.

KAN SHA SHITE - "Be grateful": We tend to focus on what others have and what we do not have, assuming that what they have is much better. This is a dangerous assumption. We do not know their circumstances. So let's focus on what we have and enjoy it in the present moment.

GYO-O HAGAME - "Do your duties fully": We should not just do the minimum required of us, but take full responsibility for who we are, and what we have. We should play a pro-active part in life, in our life's mission, learning each day and growing with it. This way, we will enjoy life to its full in the present moment.

HITO NI SHINSETSU NI - "Be kind to others": Being kind to other people is contagious. Whilst we will not necessarily get this kindness back from the same person, the Universe will send it back to us in different ways. Being kind to others makes us feel better about ourselves.

These 5 Gokai have deep meaning - further developed in our teaching. This makes them a daily spiritual guide to life.
